Qiu Jie, pen name “Ta-xiang Shan-ren” (Recluse from a Distant Land), was born in Shanghai in 1961. As a child, Qiu Jie was left to the care of his grandparents in Shanghai when his parents were relocated to Anhui province in support of the development of small cities. Raised by his grandparents, Qiu Jie began drawing at the age of ten. He would practice many hours each day by tracing newspaper images of workers, farmers, and soldiers. When Qiu Jie was in the middle school, he usually drew in his friend’s studio until midnight. In 1978, his extraordinary record enabled him to skip a grade and be admitted to the Art Department of the Shanghai Light Industry College. After graduation, he worked as an art designer in an instrument company in Shanghai for six years. During this period, his job took him to several cities and provinces throughout China where he organized product displays and advertisements. These travels brought him the opportunities to see the wide land and visit famous sites, through which Qiu accumulated a large amount of inspiration and graphics that constantly serve as an inexhaustible source of his creation up to now.
Qiu held his first solo exhibition in May 1985 at Xuhui Cultural Center in Shanghai when he was merely twenty-four. Recommended by two Swiss artists, he enrolled into the Academy of Fine Arts in Geneva in 1989, and obtained his Bachelor Degree five years later. Thence he began to work on large-scale drawings and oil paintings. The size of his artworks started from 3 by 6 meters up to 6 by 12 meters, which usually required six months to two years to complete. Meanwhile Qiu stepped onto a unique level when exploring his artistic forms and contents. Choosing his special life experience from being one of the Chinese Cultural Revolution generations as a theme, Qiu combined the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting and the techniques of Western painting, which endows his artworks with a dynamic tension borne out of incongruity and poetry. Qiu obtained many achievements during the past years, including the First Prize of the Geneva Academy of Fine Arts Graduates, Paris-based International Art Center Award for inspection, Geneva Award for Outstanding Artist Studio (two-year), and the Swiss Federal Art Prize. His artworks were frequently exhibited in Switzerland, France, and China, and also collected by many art foundations and individual collectors.
